Flared jeans are currently fashionable, but some individuals may find them too long for them. Here’s an easy solution to shorten them without needing a sewing machine: by folding over the bottom edge.

Once your jeans have been folded to their new hem length, carefully seam rip around one pantleg’s edge to open it up and pin a two-inch side fabric piece onto that original fold at its top edge. This will provide your desired new hem length while still allowing easy letouts in future.

Iron the edge of your new hem so it is flat. Stitch around it using either a straight stitch or, for an updated and professional finish, use a zigzag stitch instead.
If that is what suits your preference, feel free to leave the hems unstitched; this will create an authentic yet trendy unfinished look – not to mention they will continue fraying beautifully after each wash!

If you opt to do this, be sure to trim both of the pants legs down to match their new hemlines, either trimming off their side seam or inseam. Alternately, cut it completely if you prefer shorter trousers.
To finish off, try on your jeans and ensure they fit correctly. If they don’t, stitch two lines following the red stitching line shown here so they will lie flat more easily. Alternatively, trim some off of their original hem line if necessary but I usually don’t find this necessary with flare or wide leg jeans.
All that remains now is for you to enjoy your brand-new jeans in their ideal length for you! Make sure you pair yours with classic 60s/70s tops, shoes, and accessories to complete the look!
